How Weight Loss Is Like Dancing

"How Weight Loss Is Like Dancing"," Those times that they gain a better understanding of themselves and realize that they can succeed.
When first starting out, it can be downright overwhelming.

I love dancing.
I was a ballerina in a dance company.
Thanks goodness, Andres is not only a great teacher; he also has patience and a sense of humor!

Here are some things that I've noticed by stretching myself dancing that apply to clients stretching themselves to make changes to reduce body fat, improve fitness and be healthier.
Before a lesson, I usually find myself thinking, ""What if I mess up? What if I look silly?"" Take a deep breath and say to your inner critic ""Don't be intimidated.
"" Give yourself permission to make mistakes.
I realized that I had to let go of ballet technique (think Swan Lake) to be able to move my hips (think Dirty Dancing).

Follow a formula.
You have to know the rules before you can break them.

BUT add your own flavor/style.
In dance, the steps may be the same, but no one moves or feels the music in exactly the same way.
Each persons past experiences and challenges are unique, so their path to success must reflect that and fit their lifestyle.
Andres and I have taught a fitness class called Zumba together for 3 years, so I can hold my own with him in class.
When you are trying something new, the quickest way to grow and get better is working with someone with experience and training in that area.

You won't be good in one lesson.
Similarly, there is no way you're going to drop 20 pounds in two weeks or run a marathon after one couple of sessions on the treadmill.
It takes layering and small steps to progress.
I had to learn to let go and follow the lead of my partner.
It's the same with changing your lifestyle or behavior.
