The samba is mostly associated with the carnivals in Rio and Brazilian culture. It originated in Africa and made its way to Latin America around the beginning of the 20th century. Its popularity was greatly increased in the 30's and 40's when radio got popular across the country. In Brazil the samba has a national holiday every Dec 2nd. The samba caught on in the United States when the bossa nova came out in the 80's. Today it is a
popular ballroom dance that anyone doing ballroom dancing should know.
